Live Review: Daytrader/The Classic Crime @ Zumiez Couch Tour-Portland

Zumiez Couch Tour 2012 with Daytrader and The Classic Crime

May 28 – Portland, OR

Zumiez Couch Tour is an annual event that takes place in mall parking lots across the country. Throughout the day there are skate demos and live music, plus a handful of booths. It’s almost like a miniature version of Warped Tour. This year the bands playing at the Portland stop were Daytrader—a band I was not familiar with—and The Classic Crime—whom I have followed since the release of “Albatross”.

The music for the day began with Long Island’s Daytrader. They started out strong with “Firebreather”, a song from their new album “Twelve Years”. From start to finish the band passionately played through a mix of songs from their new album and their EP. Although most of the crowd had never heard of the band, by the end of their set the entire crowd was singing along and clearly enjoying the music. Their excellent performance of “deadfriends”, another song from the new album, was a highlight of the set and sounded even better live than recorded. The band closed their set strong as well with “Kill My Compass”, which had the entire crowd moving and screaming the words back at the band. This band’s live show and performance is excellent, I would definitely recommend seeing them if you have the chance. You will not be disappointed.

Their début full-length, Twelve Years, is out now on Rise Records.

After a quick stage change, Seattle’s The Classic Crime took the stage. Clearly, this was who most of the crowd was familiar with and had come to see as the band ripped through “Gravedigging”. Continuing a tradition for their live shows, singer Matt MacDonald introduced “Abracadavers” with a ridiculous story about guitarist Robbie Negrin. The band continued on with tracks from all three of their releases, only stopping to thank their fans for the success of their Kickstarter and introduce a new song from that album, “You and Me Both”. After the new song, they played an alternate version of “The Coldest Heart” that had the entire crowd singing along. The band slowed down their set with “Salt In The Snow”, and then closed their set with “Medisin”. Once the band began to leave the stage the entire crowd began to call for an encore. After a moment, the band returned to give an energy-filled performance of “Blisters and Coffee” to close the night. After seeing these guys again, I was reminded of how great they are both recorded and live, and with a new CD set to be released this summer, I’m looking forward to what the band has coming next.

Their fourth full-length,Phoenix, will be released on August 14th.
